What I do
As a heritage consultant I assist the owners of heritage-listed properties make appropriate changes to those buildings. I research the history of buildings, write heritage assessments, and prepare the documentation for local councils (eg heritage impact statements).
How I started my business
I started a part time masters in heritage conservation while still working as a banker, and realised I loved heritage more than banking! I set up as a sole trader and my first work was obtained via my uni lecturer.
What inspired me
The ability to make a difference to the built environment, and a love of history. I also wanted to work at my own pace.
Skills I use and how I developed them
Research skills, report writing, analytical ability, ability to work to a budget, negotiating skills and dealing with architects, council staff, planners etc (some of whom see heritage as a barrier). Many skills were developed as a corporate executive, but historical research skills were picked up as I went along as a heritage consultant.
What I like most
Seeing a building get a new lease on life and proving that an old building can still meet modern expectations.
What I like least
Often the reports go to council and nothing is heard from the client about the outcomes.
What surprised me most
The collegiate nature of the heritage industry.
