A day in the life of a Senior Online Marketing Executive in the United Kingdom

How I found out about the job

Employer's website

The recruitment process

I always wanted to work for Jet2.com so I kept checking the Jobs section of their website and applied when the right role came up.

My career history

Sept 2001 - Sept 2005 - Marks & Spencer IT Graduate Scheme.
Sept 2005 - Sept 2006 - Round the World Travel
Oct 2006 - May 2008 - Provident Insurance (Halifax)

Courses taken since graduation

IDM Digital Marketing

Where I hope to be in 5 years

I have recently become a mother so my career aspirations have changed. I would like to continue working in online marketing for a large brand but working on a part time basis. I would also like to set up in business myself as I would like to put all the marketing skills I have learnt into practice, whilst fitting into my home life.

My advice to students considering work

Don't underestimate the importance of applying speculatively to companies rather than through the 'traditional' recruitment process.
Always ensure you have a good reputation in the workplace so you can call on contacts as and when you need them.

What I do

I look after the day to day management of Jet2.com's and Jet2holidays online marketing campaigns. This includes pay per click, search engine optimisation, affiliate, display (banners) and social marketing campaigns. I review the performance of the campaigns daily and see how many sales each campaign has delivered and evaluate if/how we can get more volume out of them or if they need to be stopped (if they are too expensive and not delivering sales). I work with the business to determine which flying routes are not selling and may need marketing support to promote them - in this instance I devise a strategy for getting sales from this route.

Skills I use and how I developed them

Degree skills:
They helped me get my first graduate position and that has helped me get my other positions.

Extracurricular skills:
Life Coaching skills - the importance of setting goals and objective.

What I like most

I enjoy the variety of the work and seeing how many sales my campaigns deliver. I also like testing new campaigns and ideas and seeing how they perform.

What I like least

Being constrained by IT!

What would I change? I wouldn't change anything. I started off in IT which I knew wasn't right for me, but I learnt invaluable skills about project management which I have applied to my other roles.
