A day in the life of a Book Shop Manager in the United Kingdom

A good, snappy CV that reflects who you are often goes further than the best grades.

Briefly describe the organisation you work for

Oxfam is an international charity which helps people living in poverty

What do you do?

I manage a bookshop in the centre of York which raises money for Oxfam. This involves managing a paid deputy manager and a team of over 60 volunteers.

Reflecting upon your past employment and education, what led you to your current career choice?

I have had a varied career which includes working in retail, archaeology and social care.
In my current job I am able to explore my interest in books as well as working to benefit charity.

Is your current job sector different from what you thought you would enter when you graduated?

Yes - but I have worked as an archaeologist in the past

Describe your most memorable day at work

Selling a set of first edition Lord of the Rings books. But, more generally, I take pleasure in my success in building and successfully managing a large team of people.

What extracurricular activities did you undertake at university and what transferable skills did you develop through these?

I worked a part time job in retail throughout my BSc and then did a part time MA whilst working in social care

What top tips do you have for York students preparing for today’s job market and life after graduation?

Don't expect to get your dream job immediately. A good, snappy CV that reflects who you are often goes further than the best grades. Be prepared to do work that isn't directly related to your ideal career - many skills are transferable
