A day in the life of a Former Postdoc in the United Kingdom
Chemistry has been my passion since high school.
Briefly describe the organisation you work for
It's York! The lovely friendly full of ducks and geese uni :)
What do you do?
I got my PhD from University of York, with Prof. David Smith, then I started my postdoc job at his lab (working on my own research project). During my PhD I taught at the teaching labs. During my postdoc I delivered some tutorials for year 1 (organic reactions mechanisms).
Reflecting upon your past employment and education, what led you to your current career choice?
Chemistry has been my passion since high school.. to me learning and understanding chemistry put things into perspective.
Is your current job sector different from what you thought you would enter when you graduated?
Currently, I'm between jobs.
Describe your most memorable day at work
Succeeding to synthesis a complicated compound!!
What extracurricular activities did you undertake at university and what transferable skills did you develop through these?
I attended conferences and did some industrial placement. I gained communication skills and networking.
What top tips do you have for York students preparing for today’s job market and life after graduation?
Think out of the box .. don't limit your job applications to your subject! There are many jobs that you could do if you know how to tailor your CV and personal statements!
