The application process

You have to write a personal statement detailing why you want to be a teacher, what skills you have and why you would be a good teacher. On top of this, you need to organise two references. You also need to say how much experience you have had in schools, which there is a separate section for.

If you are lucky to be selected for interview, the provider will likely email you. For my course, I initially got invited to a story telling session so the course leaders could see how I was with the children. I had to tell a story which had educational value, and then reflect on the experience. Following this, I got invited to a formal interview where I could discuss my skills and why I would be suited to the course. During the day, there were interpersonal tasks, and a Maths and an English task too.

Why I continued studying

For a long time I knew I wanted to be a primary school teacher, and progressing onto a primary PGCE was the next step to reach this goal.

What my course is like

Training as a primary school teacher is very demanding. All courses are different, but with the school centred route that I am taking I adopt the role of a teacher very early on, meaning that I am often teaching for full days, attending meetings, marking, planning and assessing. On top of this, you have the university based work in order to achieve the masters qualification, so lots of essay writing too. You also have to compile a portfolio of evidence to show you are meeting the Teacher's Standards.

How I have funded my studies

I was lucky to receive a training bursary from the Department of Education. I also applied for Student Finance.

Catching every illness under the sun!

How much help and support online their is for teachers.

My career goals when I graduated

When I graduated, I thought I wanted to be a year one or a year two teacher. However, now I am over two thirds of the way through my course, this has changed! I am now looking for a job in year three, four or five.

How my studies have helped my career

Studying Education at uni was really helpful. You have a foundation of knowledge ready to be built on.

Where I hope to be in 5 years

In the next 5 years, I hope to be a subject leader in either humanities or RE as these subjects are my favourite to teach. I also hope to be undertaking a SENCO (Special Educational Needs Coordinator) qualification.

My advice to students considering further study

Follow your dreams, and don't stop until you get there. PGCE's are really tough, and I was very lucky to get onto one first time. Keep on going until you get there.
