Masters study has led on to an analyst position with a think tank

How I looked for postgraduate options

I looked at courses in top universities with a reputation for excellence in social science research.

How I found out about the postgraduate place

Course provider website

The application process

In order to apply each university had a separate online form. I had to submit 2-3 references depending on the university, all of them required a statement of purpose with some indication of my research interests. University of Oxford also required to submit two pieces of written work (I submitted 2 excerpts from essays due in my second year).

Why I continued studying

I continued studying to in order to gain research skills in preparation for pursuing research as a career (at the time I was considering doing a PhD straight after the Masters).

My career goals when I graduated

Just after graduating I was sure I wanted to pursue a career in Academia. However, after finishing my first research project during my Masters I came to better understand the difficulties that come with academic work (solitude, uneven work hours among others). Therefore, after I graduated from my Masters I decided to do research on policy outside of the university to see whether I would prefer this type of work better. Currently I am still considering going back to do a PhD in a year or two.

My career history

After finishing my MPhil in Politics I have been working as a Junior Analyst in a think tank.

What has helped my career to progress

Getting good grades and a 1st class honours degree definitely helped to get into a competitive Masters programme. Afterwards the good reputation of York and Oxford, as well as the research experience gained during the Masters programme helped me to secure my current job.

What surprised me about my career so far

It was almost like a culture shock to see how policy analysis work in a think tank differs from the kind of research done in universities. Policy work needs to be performed much quicker, there is much less opportunities to research issues in depth.

Where I hope to be in 5 years

Though since graduating I have become only less and less sure of what I would like to do, in 5 years time I would love to have finished a PhD programme (or perhaps working towards one in the US).
