New ESRC grant to study memory consolidation in sleep

Posted on 16 February 2012

The ESRC has recently awarded a three-year grant of £302,000 to Prof. Gareth Gaskell to conduct research on declarative memory consolidation. In collaboration with Dr. Shane Lindsay at Dundee University and Prof. Ken Paller at Northwestern University we will use auditory stimulation during sleep to selectively reactivate memories. By recording EEG brain responses in the Department's sleep lab we aim to learn more about how memories are stored, and identify the role of specific sleep components in consolidating and reorganising memory.
