A University For All - the University of York celebrates becoming a University of Sanctuary

Join the University of York as it celebrates becoming a ‘University of Sanctuary’. In this event, the University of York presents the debut of its film ‘A University for All’ which tells the story of how it became a University of Sanctuary for refugees, asylum seekers, human rights defenders and those in need of humanitarian protection.

Speakers:

The film will be followed by a round-table discussion with some of the film participants chaired by Dr Sara de Jong of the University of York’s Migration Network. The round-table will be followed by a musical performance by the Dan Webster Band (7.30-8.00pm).

  • Firas Chihi a refugee student who will be commencing his studies in Marketing at York in September, who has a refugee background
  • Sarli Nana, Migrant Organiser, Yorkshire & the Humber Region, Migrants Organise Ltd
  • Professor Simon Parker, University of York, Department of Politics, co-chair of the University of York Migration Network (MigNet)
  • Maryam Taher, former University of York Equal Access Scholar, and currently Universities of Sanctuary Coordinator, Regional Coordinator for North West England and South/West Yorkshire, City of Sanctuary UK
  • John Williamson, Senior Project Worker, Refugee Action York (RAY)
