Research

Overview

Research Group: Condensed Matter Physics, Biophysical Sciences Institute

My research area is biophysics and bioengineering, in particular the development of new optical microscopy methods used to study microorganisms.

Projects

Techniques

  • High-speed digital holographic microscopy
  • Computed scattering experiments (for example, differential dynamic microscopy)
  • High throughput computational image processing

Applications

  • The biophysics of propulsion in swimming microorganisms
  • Fluid mechanics of microswimmers such as bacteria and algae
  • Collective behaviour in bacterial systems

Teaching

Undergraduate

  • Heat and Matter (BSc/MPhys Year 1 core course)
  • An Introduction to LabVIEW Programming (BSc/MPhys Year 2 experimental lab)
  • Biophysics Tools & Techniques (guest lecture for Prof. Mark Leake's course) (MPhys year 4)
  • BSc Projects: current topics in experimental biophysics
  • MPhys Projects: current topics in experimental biophysics

Postgraduate

  • Supervision of PhD students
