Professor Bidyut Baruah is a specialist in project management, engineering management,
product innovation and engineering leadership in the School of Physics, Engineering and
Technology at the University of York. He is committed to advancing engineering
management education and developing the next generation of engineering and project
leaders. He holds professional certifications in PRINCE2, PRINCE2 Agile, Agile Project
Management, Lean Six Sigma and Scrum.
Professor Baruah provides academic leadership as Programme Leader for the MSc
Engineering Project Management programme and Deputy Chair of the School’s Board of
Studies. In these roles, he contributes to programme development, curriculum innovation
and the continuous enhancement of the student experience.
Passionate about active and experiential learning, Professor Baruah develops innovative
teaching approaches that extend beyond traditional lectures. His teaching incorporates
project-based learning, simulations, games and real-world case studies to develop students’
problem-solving, critical thinking, teamwork, communication and leadership skills. His areas
of teaching expertise include project management methodologies and agile approaches,
product design and marketing, entrepreneurship and intrapreneurship, innovation
management, and engineering leadership.
An alumnus of the University of York, Professor Baruah graduated with Distinction from the
MSc Engineering Management programme in 2011 before receiving a scholarship to
undertake his PhD, which he completed in 2015. His doctoral research examined the role of
senior leadership in fostering intrapreneurship within UK small businesses. He also holds a
B.Tech in Electronics and Communication Engineering from the North Eastern Regional
Institute of Science and Technology (NERIST), India.
Professor Baruah has published research on game-based entrepreneurship education,
intrapreneurship in engineering and technology businesses, organisational innovation, risk
management in small businesses, and assessment and active learning in higher education.
His current research focuses on the transformative role of Artificial Intelligence in
engineering and project-based environments, exploring how AI can enhance decision-
making, productivity, innovation and project delivery.
