Anwen Caffell

Anwen Caffell (BSc, MSc, PhD) has been working for York Osteoarchaeology Ltd since 2005, following the completion of her PhD on dental caries in early and late medieval Britain. Anwen has been involved in teaching osteology and palaeopathology at the University of Durham since 2001.

“I became fascinated by human skeletons and what they can tell us about life in the past when studying for my undergraduate degree in archaeology. I enjoyed the subject so much I went on to complete an MSc and PhD.  Since then, I have studied skeletons from all time periods, from the Neolithic to the Nineteenth Century, and found that each skeletal population is interesting in its own way. I enjoy piecing together the information held within each skeleton to discover as much as I can about that individual and how they lived their life, and then combining all that data to learn about larger populations, and how the environment, diet and lifestyle affected health in the past.”
