The Repeal of the Human Rights Act: Law, Politics, and People

Monday 15 June 2015, 1.00PM to 3.00pm

The Conservative Government has announced a “consultation” into its proposal to repeal the Human Rights Act and to replace it with a “British Bill of Rights”.

In this round table, a group of academics and activists will examine the legal and political issues and implications of the proposal.

Participants (tbc) and topics include:

  • Dr Joanna Gilmore (York Law School) - The HRA and the Right to Protest
  • Representatives from Refugee and Asylum Seeker Participatory Action Research (RAPAR), a Manchester-based human rights organisation working with people, both locally and further afield, who are at risk of having their rights denied.
  • Abiola who, together with RAPAR and her family, is fighting the deportation of her daughter to Nigeria where she faces female genital mutilation (more information)
  • Dr Adam Tucker (York Law School)
  • Dr Kathryn Wright (York Law School) - The ECHR and EU Membership
  • University of York Amnesty International

The event is sponsored by the Morrell Centre for Toleration at the University of York and will be chaired by its Director, Matt Matravers.
