The Elizabeth Salter Fund  was created in memory of Professor Elizabeth Salter (1925-1980), a member of the Department of English and Related Literature and one of the founders of the Centre for Medieval Studies.  It supports research and career development of postgraduate students at the Centre for Medieval Studies in the form of grants to support all or part of the costs of travel to archaeological or historic sites, archives, libraries and museums to conduct research on unique holdings; to support the purchase of photographs or digital images in lieu of travel; or to contribute towards travel to and registration fees for conferences at which the student will give a paper.

Richard III Society Dissertation Prize

The Richard III Society awards a prize of £500 each year to the student with the highest dissertation mark and is on a topic relating to:

  • Chronological - dissertations relating to the fifteenth century.
  • Geographical - dissertations relating to the British Isles and Western Europe
  • Multi- and inter-disciplinary - dissertations submitted for the MA in Medieval Studies, the MA in Medieval History, the MA in Medieval Literatures, the MA in Medieval Archaeology or the MA in History of Art (Medieval Pathway).

Garmonsway Dissertation Prize

The Garmonsway Dissertation Prize is awarded each year to the student with the highest dissertation mark from the MA in Medieval Studies cohort. The award is a prize of £200 and the prize winner will be notified after the final board of exams meeting in November of each year.

Norman Garmonsway was Chair of English Literature at King's College, University of London, until his retirement in 1965 at the age of 67. His sudden death in February 1967 gave the occasion for raising a memorial fund here at the newly founded University where medieval studies was already seen as a future strength of the Department of English and Related Literature.
