Gillian is a Lecturer in Management. Prior to joining the York Management School in October 2018 Gillian worked as Head of Postgraduate Programmes at York St John University where she led the revalidation of York Business Schools Masters programmes, introducing professional body accreditation into the new MBA and MSc suite. With a commitment to support international students, Gillian embedded academic skills support into the postgraduate business management suite. Gillian has also worked as Senior Lecturer at Huddersfield University managing the full time MBA programme and teaching on a wide range of undergraduate and postgraduate business management modules. She has recently undertaken work for the Department for the Environment, Food and Farming, preparing strategies for stakeholder engagement in preparation for EU Exit.
Gillian has edited two international textbooks supporting undergraduate and postgraduate students in ‘Organisational Behaviour, Management and the Sociology of Work’ and ‘Managing People, Self and the Organisation’. Gillian’s research interests are in learning pedagogy and processes supporting international students to learn and reflective practice for managers, these research interests build on her doctoral study into how international MBA students learn to reflect. Gillian is a Chartered Management Institute (CMI) Chartered Manager and a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (now Advance HE).
Gillian’s research interests are in the field of reflective practice, specifically how critically reflexive practices supports management development. She is interested in theories and practice around critical pedagogy and supporting international students develop critical thinking and critical writing skills. Gillian believes in the value of dialogue and storytelling as a way of developing the deeper and more critical levels of reflection and learning.
Gillian’s book chapter on reflective practice explores tools and frameworks for supporting managers to reflect on practice. This builds on her PhD thesis exploring how dialogical conversations and storytelling helps students learn to reflect. Working across discipline Gill has engaged in a series of online dialogical conversations with a colleague from the School of Education at York St John University, they are currently preparing a paper on the results of their dialogues.
Gillian is interested in qualitative research methods, particularly the use of auto-ethnography as a way of learning about self in the context of others’ learning journeys. Gillian has supervised undergraduate and postgraduate dissertations
