The making of medieval materials

Posted on 19 July 2018

John Lee has recently published a new book exploring the medieval cloth-making trade in England.

John S. Lee is one of CLL’s course tutors, leading the ‘Making and Marketing Cloth in Medieval England’ course and other learning for pleasure courses. His new publication, The Medieval Clothier, aims to provide a clear and accessible guide to the trade that was England’s leading industry in the late middle ages.

The book offers the first recent survey of the hugely important trade of cloth-making, and examines a wide range clothiers from across England, drawing parallels with modern capitalism and considering clothiers as early entrepreneurs. It also contains valuable resources in the form of extracts from clothiers' wills and a useful index of suggested places to visit.

John cites his students as being very helpful in the writing process, saying “in writing [the book] I’ve benefited from many useful ideas from students on my Centre for Lifelong Learning course”.

As well as tutoring in CLL, John is a Research Associate in the Centre for Medieval Studies.

The Medieval Clothier is available now from the publisher’s website.
