The Consequences of the Anglo-Norman Invasion of Ireland

In 1169, Anglo-Norman mercenaries landed in Ireland at the request of Diarmait mac Murchada (Dermot MacMurragh), the deposed King of Leinster, beginning the Anglo-Norman invasion of Ireland. However, the Kings of England had difficulty maintaining their Irish lands and by the end of the 1400s central English authority in Ireland had all but disappeared. This course examines the consequences of the conquest of Ireland, how Ireland was ruled and lost by England, and the re-establishment of English rule by the Tudors under Henry VII.
