There has been a huge rise in personal and professional diagnoses of mental health problems and mental disorders seemingly relating to the COVID-19 pandemic. However, rates of mental disorder and mental health problems have increased massively since the medicalisation of madness in the 19th century and the cultural sanctification of the ‘self’ in the 20th century. But is there a genuine pandemic of psychological suffering or an undue amplification of everyday difficulties which can be described as ‘mental-healthism’?
