Kindness: a Sociological Approach to Understanding Why People and Communities are Compassionate

Saturday 3 February 2024, 10.00AM to 1.00pm

Speaker(s): Peter Morrall BA MSc PhD PGCE

In a world full of news and social media commentary about callousness, cruelty, and killings, it would seem that these are inherent and indefatigable qualities of humanity. But most people, most of the time, are kind. This course examines kindness from sociological perspectives as well as ideas and evidence from psychology, social psychology, anthropology, biology, and zoology. These questions will be addressed: What is kindness? Why are people and communities kind? Are animals kind? Why does kindness not get more attention?
