Speaker(s): Angelos Sofocleous BA MA PhD

Statue of a philosopher

The renowned British philosopher AN Whitehead once described the Western philosophical tradition as ‘a series of footnotes to Plato’. This course is an introduction to Ancient Greek Philosophy through the work of major figures ranging from the Thales of Miletus to Epicurus, and covers core schools of thought, such as Platonism, Aristotelianism, Cynicism, Stoicism, and Epicureanism. We will explore how the Ancient Greeks set the foundations for philosophical thought by approaching questions such as, ‘What is the nature of reality?’, ‘What is beauty?’, ‘What makes a good person?’, ‘Why does the world exist?’, ‘What is the best system of government?’
