The Romantic Symphony

Tuesday 23 January 2024, 10.00AM to 12 midday

Speaker(s): Martin Dreyer BA BMus

Musicians playing violins in an orchestra

The nine symphonies of Beethoven were both the culmination of the Classical symphony and the start of the Romantic. Schubert’s nine introduce striking colours, while Mendelssohn’s begin to venture into the programmatic. Schumann is more formally adventurous, while Brahms is more retrospective and Dvorak also belongs to a more conservative tradition. Bruckner and later Mahler gave Austria a distinctive voice, rivalling the great Russians, especially Tchaikovsky. Meanwhile Berlioz, Liszt and Wagner had been working from a much larger canvas. The fascinating facets of the Romantic symphony will be thoroughly examined.
