Adapting Frankenstein

Since its publication in 1818, Mary Shelley’s novel Frankenstein has provided inspiration for countless adaptations. From the famous 1931 Universal film, to Ahmed Saadawi’s novel set during the Iraq war, Frankenstein in Baghdad and even films like The Rocky Horror Picture Show and Blade Runner, Shelley’s novel has been reimagined in a huge variety of different ways. In this course we will study a selection of adaptations and learn how each version of the Frankenstein story emphasises different themes and perspectives. Finally, there will be the opportunity to consider where else Frankenstein can take us and devise our own adaptations.
