Who did it? How? And why? Follow the sleuths on a journey through the crime fiction of Dorothy L Sayers and Agatha Christie

Monday 22 January 2024, 2.00PM to 4.00pm

Speaker(s): Ruth Beckett BA MA DPhil

An open book with a magnifying glass and a pair of glasses

Think of Dorothy L Sayers and Agatha Christie and the names of Lord Peter Wimsey, Hercule Poirot and Jane Marple – more commonly known as Miss Marple – come to mind. But what kind of characters are they? What can we learn from the novels of Dorothy L Sayers and Agatha Christie about their approach to crime fiction? How far do they reflect the attitudes and social mores of their age – there is some very discriminatory language in Agatha Christie’s novels – and how far do the crime novels of these two women challenge some of the attitudes and prejudices of their society?
