The Life and Works of Lord Alfred Tennyson

Lord Alfred Tennyson is perhaps one of the most famous poets of the Victorian era, having been Poet Laureate during a considerable part of Queen Victoria’s reign. He was an influential figure, inspiring movements and literary creations as wide-ranging as Pre-Raphaelite painting, and Bram Stoker’s Dracula. In this course, we will analyse Tennyson’s life and work: through background information and close-reading of his poetry, we will seek to understand and contextualise both his popular works such as ‘Maud' and ‘In Memoriam’, and some of his lesser-known writings.
