From ‘The Mezzotint’ to ‘Number 13’, MR James’ ghost stories are well known for their capacity to thrill; indeed, James has often been hailed as one of the most efficient writers of horror to have ever lived. But what is the background of his ghost stories? And what is James trying to tell us about the human condition, and our relationship with the world? Beyond the mere thrill of terror, this course explores the cultural and historical context of James’ stories, and discusses how they subtly explore ideas related to humanity, the afterlife, madness, and guilt.
