Old English literature offers its readers manifold word-hoards, waiting to be unlocked. These fascinating texts, many preserved in single manuscript copies almost a millennium old, are found in a variety of genres, from epic and lyric, to historiography and hagiography. On this weekend course, we will give you the tools to read a range of Old English texts both in translation and the original. We look at several key Old English texts, discuss their contexts and textual mechanics, and compare the effect of different translations – thus equipping you to make your own.
