Thursday 18 April 2024, 2.00PM to 4.00pm
Speaker(s): Peter Finch PhD
Unlike his rival Michelangelo, Raphael was not just a superb draughtsman and designer, but also an exceptional organiser, delegator, and social networker. As a consequence, he was able through his large and highly efficient workshop to produce an extraordinary number of high-quality artworks and schemes of decoration, and, despite his short life, rose to become, alongside Michelangelo, the other dominant Central Italian artist of his age. This course will focus on the paintings of Raphael and his network of friendships, rivalries and associates, in order to examine his crucial role in developing and contesting a 'high' Renaissance style.
