Saturday 9 March 2024, 2.00PM to 5.00pm
Speaker(s): Elena Kashina MPhil Mphil PhD
In this course we shall examine the work of two outstanding Renaissance masters, Andrea Mantegna and Giovanni Bellini, juxtaposing their personal styles, with an emphasis on traditional iconographies and conflicting influences from the various centres of artistic excellence of the time, such as Rome, Padua, Venice, and Byzantine heritage. Members of the same family, familiar with each other’s work, they produced highly distinct pictorial narratives, visually captivating, respectful of each other and illustrative of the intellectual currents of the time.
