Known for being the place where the famous poet and mystic Rumi (1207-1273) lived and died, Konya was also an important city during the centuries of Roman and Byzantine rule in Turkey. From 1097, the city became the capital of the empire founded by the Seljuks of Rum (1077-1308), and was enriched with splendid buildings. In this study day we will explore the masterpieces produced by the Seljuks of Rum and we will also analyse a unique group of early carpets, most likely made in the Konya and commissioned by the sultan or a member of his entourage.
