Speaker(s): Cristina Figueredo BA MA PhD
The longest reigning sultan of the Ottoman Empire and the most successful Christian Military Order met twice in battle: in 1522 at Rhodes and in 1565 at Malta. Suleiman the Magnificent and the Knights Hospitaller respected and admired one another but they were also implacable and bitter enemies. This one-day course will study the history of this remarkable relationship based on Suleiman’s and the Hospitallers’ enmity and their competition for supremacy in the Mediterranean, which helped shape early Modern Europe.
