Medieval Money, Trade And Banking

Ever wondered what groats, marks and nobles were, or how medieval peasants paid their rents? What happened to Britain’s money economy after the Romans left? What was the impact of the Crusades, and the thirteenth century commercial revolution, on trade, taxes, tolls, towns, medieval merchants and the rise of international banking? How did England’s economy recover from the crisis of the Black Death and why did the Tudors reform our currency into pounds, shillings and pence? This course will investigate the history of medieval money, trade and banking in England from the Roman to the Tudor periods.
