Strange Laws of Medieval Europe

Thursday 25 January 2024, 2.00PM to 4.00pm

Old handwritten papers

In Medieval England, all whales washed up on the shore belonged – by law – to the monarch. Many laws like this one sound very strange; some of them, however, are still in the Statutes. This course will explore some of the strangest laws of Medieval Europe from articles of Magna Carta to the reasons behind the establishment of habeas corpus. It will study the laws connected to food, dress, relationships, etc. In addition, it will deal with crime and punishment.
