Against popular belief, medieval people travelled far and wide. They left their villages and towns and embarked on long trips to the Holy Land, Santiago de Compostela or Rome. They would also visit as many shrines closer to home as they could. This course will explore the logistics of travelling in the Middle Ages. In addition, by studying detailed travel journals, it will highlight the problems pilgrims had to face and the way in which they solved them.
