Elizabeth Wydville: The Worst Possible Bride for Edward IV?

Saturday 10 February 2024, 10.00AM to 4.00pm

Speaker(s): Gillian Waters BA MA PGDip PGCE

The King's Manor building, York

In 1464 Elizabeth Wydville, a Lancastrian widow, married Edward IV, the first Yorkist king, who had gained the throne after the bloody Battle of Towton. This marriage alienated Edward’s greatest supporter, Richard Neville, Earl of Warwick, and led to the outbreak of the second half of the Wars of the Roses. Elizabeth survived her husband, plotted against Richard III, and lived to witness the marriage of her eldest daughter to Henry Tudor in 1486. This day school explores the career of Elizabeth Wydville, and the allegations of witchcraft, and even murder, made against her.
