The achievements and legacy of the Carolingian empire have had an enduring impact on the history of Europe. As Emperor of the West, Charlemagne aimed to recreate the Roman Empire, after it had declined and fallen in the 5th century. By exploring Carolingian documents, art and architecture, this course will focus on the cultural and economic reforms, and the military campaigns that took place during Charlemagne’s reign. In particular, it will study the relationship between Charlemagne and Alcuin of York.
