Victorian visual art will be considered from a variety of cultural and historical perspectives in this module. It will be situated within contemporary artistic and social debates; including questions about modernity, technological developments, race, gender, sexuality and the body in the nineteenth century. We will explore individual artworks by principal artists and movements of the period in detail. Although mainly concerned with painting, we will take account of corresponding developments in architecture, sculpture and photography and consider collective cultural agendas.
