From 1154 to 1272, the Angevin kings of England were simultaneously lords of vast territories on the continent and, therefore, vassals of the King of France. Under the Angevin monarchs, England witnessed the implementation of Common Law, was part of the 12th-Century Renaissance, went on Crusade, and was granted the Magna Carta. By critically analysing textual and visual sources, this module will examine the political, social and cultural nature of the Angevin Empire against the backdrop of an increasingly powerful French monarchy.
