Wednesday 10 January 2024, 7.00PM to 9.00pm
This module will introduce you to the theory and practice of adapting stories. Every fortnight, we will, first, closely read a different modern or contemporary text in relation to one or more of its print, theatrical, radio, or screen adaptations. In what cultural and historical contexts was each written and read? What was lost or gained in the adaptation process? And does this matter? We will, then, with this case-study in mind, consider how to adapt a generic or formal feature of a text. You will develop the skills to engage with cutting-edge critical debates and to negotiate the ethics and logistics of ‘translating’ texts’ plot, characters, perspective, style, and intertexts in your own adaptations.
