This module will introduce students to the pleasures and pitfalls of novel writing, from conception to completion. Fundamental aspects of the novel as a literary form will be discussed through the study of a range of novels, including genre and literary fiction. Strategies will be developed to manage and maintain the writing process for large projects, and we will study structure, plot, characterisation and the various stages of editing. Study will include discussion of published novels, writing exercises and sharing extracts of work for feedback through workshopping sessions. This course is suitable for all novelists, whether your book is almost finished or a still-forming idea.
