This course will introduce students to basic issues in metaphysics, the philosophical study of the nature of reality. Topics covered will include questions about free will, the distinction between particulars and universals, realism versus idealism and the nature of time. The course will require no previous knowledge of philosophy or metaphysics. We will read and discuss excerpts from both classic texts in the history of western philosophy (Plato, Locke, Berkely, Hume, Leibniz) and contemporary philosophy (Quine, Armstrong, van Inwagen, J.J.C. Smart, Kathrine Hawley).
