The Literary Landscapes of Thomas Hardy

This course will explore the literary landscapes of Thomas Hardy. It will consider the complex and multifarious ways in which his novels drew upon the social and geographical landscapes with which he was familiar, while at the same time exploring plot, character and theme in ways which transcend their setting. This course will focus primarily on Far from the Madding Crowd, Tess of the D’Urbervilles, The Return of the Native and The Woodlanders although there will be reference to other novels.
