The Mystery of Pope Joan

Saturday 24 June 2023, 10.00AM to 4.00pm

Speaker(s): Gillian Waters BA MA PGDip PGCE

The story of a female pope first appeared in the thirteenth century, ‘a woman who disguised herself as a man and became, by her character and talents, a curial secretary, then a Cardinal and finally Pope’. Many believed this legend to be true until 1601 when Pope Clement VII declared it a fallacy. This day school examines the origins of the myth of Pope Joan and explores the reasons why it became such a popular story in the medieval period.
