Margery Kempe: Medieval English Entrepreneur, Mystic and Traveller

Saturday 10 December 2022, 10.00AM to 4:30pm

Speaker(s): Cristina Figueredo BA MA PhD

Margery Kempe (1373-1438) dictated the earliest surviving autobiography in English. Her ‘book’ was lost for centuries until it was found in 1934. In the late Middle Ages, however, the manuscript had been in the possession of the Carthusians of Mount Grace Priory. This course will explore the remarkable life of Margery Kempe, who attempted to run a brewery, later became a mystic, and travelled extensively throughout Europe and the Holy Land.
