Saturday 29 October 2022, 10.00AM to 1:15pm

Speaker(s): John Lee BA MA PhD

Clothmaking became England’s leading industry in the Middle Ages, both in terms of the employment that it generated and the value of its exports. We will look at the various processes involved in clothmaking and try to explain why the industry developed in some regions but not others. We will also look at those individuals who amassed huge wealth from clothmaking, examine how these entrepreneurs made their fortunes, and how they spent it to create lasting legacies of their trade.
