An Introduction to Electromagnetism

Saturday 18 June 2022, 10.00AM to 4:30PM

Speaker(s): Thomas Shutt BSc MSc

Together with gravity and the two nuclear forces, our Universe is governed by electromagnetic interactions. We see the Universe around us because of electromagnetic radiation, while modern technology is possible because of our mastery of the electromagnetic force. In this course we will look at how electricity and magnetism are two sides of the same coin, dipping our toes into the wavey world of quantum physics along the way. We will look first at the world according to Faraday, Ampere, and Maxwell, before introducing the Universe according to Dirac, Fermi, and Feynman. While this is an introductory course, we will discuss some mathematical concepts. However, we will do so gently - and no prior maths experience is necessary.
