Strange Fruit: Women Pioneers of Jazz

Saturday 4 December 2021, 10.00AM to 1.00pm

Speaker(s): Martin Fletcher PhD FHEA

Ask anyone for a list of great jazz musicians and the names will almost exclusively be men. Yet throughout the music’s history, the jazz scene has been brimming with female talent. From the vision of Louis Armstrong’s pianist wife Lil Hardin and the aching intensity of Billie Holiday’s voice, to the ground-breaking experimentalism of Carla Bley and Annette Peacock. The course will uncover the untold story of women’s unique and lasting contribution to a form of music which has lost none of its power.
