The Literary Landscapes of Elizabeth Gaskell

This course will explore the literary landscapes of Elizabeth Gaskell. It will consider the complex and multifarious ways in which her novels explored ‘the condition of England’ question, drawing upon the social and geographical landscapes with which she was familiar while at the same time exploring plot, character and theme in ways which transcend their setting. This course will focus primarily on Mary Barton, North and South and Wives and Daughters although there will be reference to other works.
