Built, repaired and repurposed, York’s city walls are linked to defence, power, trade, and civic pride. Utilising archaeological and documentary evidence, we will explore the changing functions and uses of York’s iconic walls, as well as their role in shaping how the city would have been experienced. This session focuses primarily on the medieval period, when the walls were at their largest, most important, and most flexible in function.
