King Harold: The Last Anglo-Saxon King

Saturday 11 June 2022, 10.00AM to 4:30PM

Speaker(s): Cristina Figueredo BA MA PhD

Harold Godwinson, King of England, famously died fighting the Normans at the Battle of Hastings in 1066, but who was he? Most of what we know about him has been written by Normans, who claimed he had become William the Conqueror’s vassal. The Anglo-Saxon Chronicle, on the other hand, depicts him as a proud and powerful earl. This course will assess all the available evidence to trace the life and deeds of the last Anglo-Saxon King of England.
