John of Gaunt, third son of King Edward III was a military leader, powerful politician, and patron of Geoffry Chaucer, but he is perhaps best known for his twenty-five-year long relationship with Kathryn Swynford. This day school examines the career of John of Gaunt, his connections with Knaresborough Forest, and his relationship with Kathryn Swynford. Was this relationship ‘one of the greatest and most remarkable love stories’? Or did they eventually marry for the sake of their four illegitimate children?
