Cult and Landscape: Saints and Pilgrimage in the Middle Ages

Monday 24 January 2022, 7.00PM to 9.00pm

Speaker(s): Ross McIntire BA MA PhD

For the medieval Christian, the holy men and women venerated as saints served as intercessor, doctor, and protector, and their bodies only grew more potent when they died. Why were the saints so important, and what might the medieval believer have encountered as they went to seek their aid? This multidisciplinary course will examine the origins and development of medieval pilgrimage and how, despite centuries of change, the cult of the saints can still be accessed in the landscape today.
